Our hedgehog station

The hedgehog station in brief:

The hedgehog rooms look like terrariums, which are only visible through a glass pane at the front, allowing the hedgehogs to retreat. In addition, each animal has its own little house as a retreat. Igel-Hilfe Schweiz provides each hedgehog with its own “cave”; hedgehogs are solitary animals even if many believe they live in groups. The hedgehog rooms are easy to clean so that hygiene standards can be kept high and the animals can be protected from insects or mites.

The hedgehog quarantine station is for all hedgehogs that we need to keep a close eye on or need more intensive care because they are suffering from an infectious disease.

Wounds (e.g. caused by lawnmowers, trimmers and other things) are treated in the hedgehog laboratory. There is a microscope to remove mites and ticks and a vet’s table so that our vet can carry out minor surgical procedures. Thanks to the system in the hedgehog laboratory, we can send the images from the microscope directly to the vet for review.

The hedgehog kitchen resembles an ultra-modern gastro kitchen made of chrome steel – including an industrial dishwasher. Hygiene is the top priority here. This is also confirmed by the veterinary office, which we repeatedly impress with our system. From our own experience, the initial additional costs pay off over the years.

In the reception area, e-mails are written, telephone calls are made and all important patient data is collected. Every hedgehog is carefully checked and documented – including their eating habits. In addition, the incoming hedgehogs undergo an initial health check in the reception area; if everything is in order, they move into their personal hedgehog room.

The washing area is intended for the hygienic cleaning of all textiles such as cloths, blankets and clothing and is equipped accordingly.

Our tasks

Our mission at the Hedgehog Sanctuary is to provide a safe home for injured, sick or helpless hedgehogs and support them on their road to recovery. We work diligently to give these often misunderstood and overlooked animals a voice and meet their needs. Through care, medical attention and rehabilitation, we strive to give each and every hedgehog the best possible chance of a healthy and happy life in the wild. Our work also includes educating the public about the importance of hedgehog conservation and promoting measures to preserve their habitats. Every rescued hedgehog is a success for us and drives us to continue our commitment to these fascinating and important animals.

  • Baby rearing: We lovingly care for newborn or young hedgehog babies that have been separated from their mothers due to various circumstances or otherwise need help.
  • First aid: Immediate medical care and accommodation in a warm and safe environment to stabilize the hedgehog’s state of health.
  • Housing: Provide suitable housing that meets the needs and well-being of the young hedgehogs.
  • Age determination: carrying out examinations to determine the exact age of the hoglets and adjusting their care accordingly.
  • Weighing and marking: Regular weight checks and marking of hedgehogs to identify and track their progress.
  • Nutrition: Ensure a balanced and appropriate diet for the young hedgehogs, including correct feeding techniques and quantities.
  • Toiletting and personal hygiene: Support with excretion and maintenance of personal hygiene to maintain the health and well-being of the hoglets.
